A handy hack when your catheter slips off!

I'm sure you've been there, you are asleep in bed or walking your kids to school and suddenly you are soaking wet?

Yes your catheter has slipped and now you have urine all over you with your catheter bag detached from your catheter!

Now when I was waiting for my surgical date for my Suprapubic catheter I joined a couple groups on Facebook who offer advice for anyone who needs help or advice. I noticed a large trend that a lot of people find their catheter randomly slips from their bag or flip flow valve and they are suddenly covered in urine. It's a horrible feeling and worse if you are in public with no where to freshen up.

When I've been getting use to my new catheter I woke up on morning and found myself soaking wet. The duvet, the mattress and I was embarrassed. Now you don't need to be embarrassed but it's easier said than done. If you have helpful people around you they will make you feel better and if you are disabled in other ways you may have someone to help you change the bedding. But we all wish it didn't happen and not all of us are surrounded by positive helpful people. Some make fun at the fact you are now covered in wee which is really unhelpful.

Did you know around 83% of disabled people weren't born disabled? Why do I say this? Because it shows it can literally happen to anyone for a multitude of reasons.

After searching for ways to stop this happening I saw a post someone had made on Instagram. It showed a little device, a catheter stay clip. It's a simple design made by a wonderful woman who is a carer. She found the people she carers for loose their confidence and not wanting to go out because of embarrassing moment that you are suddenly covered in wee.

I'm not way sponsored to her but I think her Clip is too amazing not to share and the more people that know the better as it will help so many catheter users to become more confident in knowing that your catheter is safe!

All I can say is give if a go. It's a shame companies who make catheters don't use a different design or have these clips already attached to bags and valves to stop any issues but sadly we aren't there yet and medical equipment generally changes for the better at a slow pace. It's frustrating but true. So give this a go, it's really life-changing for so many people.
